American History is designed to provide students with the analytical skills and enduring understandings necessary to deal critically with the problems and materials in United States history. This course provides a general overview of the history of the United States from the Civil War to the end of the 20th century, tracing how the U.S. became a modern nation. Students will not only learn to assess historical materials and weigh the evidence and interpretations presented in historical scholarship, but also develop the skills necessary to arrive at conclusions on the basis of an informed judgment and to present reasons and evidence clearly and persuasively in an essay format.
